1839- Paul Cézanne, son of the hat producer Louis-Auguste and one of his workers, Anne-Elisabeth, was born in Aix-en-Provence on 19 January.
1841- His sister Marie was born on 4 July.
1844- Louis-Auguste and Anne Elisabeth get married.
1848- Louis-Auguste founds the bank “Cézanne et Cabassol”.
1850- Marie-Hortense Fiquet, the future Mme. Cézanne was born.
1852- Cézanne begins as a border at the Collège Bourbon, where he starts a close friendship with Baptistin Baille and the future French writer Emile Zola.
1854- His sister Rose was born on 30 June.
1856- Paul Cézanne takes art-classes at the Design School of Aix.
1858- Zola leaves for Paris. Cézanne wins second prize at the School and passes his baccalaureate after trying twice.
1859- Starts studying law at the University of Aix. His father acquires the house known as ΓÇ£Jas de BouffanΓÇ¥, where he establishes an studio.
1861- Paul, encouraged by Zola and supported by his mother and sister, goes for the first time to Paris. He visits the annual Salon and works at the Atelier Suisse, where he meets Pissarro. After being rejected from the Académie des Beaux-Arts, he returns to Aix and takes a position at his father’s bank.
1862- Cézanne decides to devote himself exclusively to painting, he quits the bank and goes back to Paris, where he stays until 1870. During this period he goes regularly to visit Aix . Works again at the Atelier Suisse and sees Pissarro, Bazille, Renoir, Sisley and Monet .
1863- Cézanne exhibits at the Salon des Refusés.
1864/69- His works are constantly rejected at the Salons.
1869- Paul meets Marie-Hortense Fiquet.
1870- During the war against Prussia, Cézanne lives in secret with Marie-Hortense at Aix and l’Estaque.
1871- End of the war, Cézanne returns to Paris.
1872- Son Paul is born 4 January . Cézanne moves to Pontoise and starts working alongside Pissarro. Late in the following year he moves to Auvers-sur-Oise and begins a long friendship with Dr. Gachet.
1873- He makes some etchings with Dr. GachetΓÇÖs press.
1874- Lives at Auvers and takes part in the first Impressionist exhibition with three pictures.
1875- In Paris. Cézanne is introduced to Chocquet who becomes a friend and collector of his works.
1876- He refuses to take part in the second Salon des Impressionnistes.
1877- Cézanne lives in Paris and takes part in the third impressionist exhibition. Only the painter Georges Rivière appreciates his works. With this new public and critical failure, Cézanne becomes more secluded.
1878- At lΓÇÖEstaque and Aix. His father learns of his relationship with Hortense Fiquet and unsuccessfully tries to separate them.
1879- Cézanne works at Médan where he sees Emile Zola. He is rejected at the Salon.
1880- In Paris. Cézanne meets Chocquet and the impressionists again.
1881- Lives in Pontoise, near Pissarro. He is rejected at the Salon.
1882- He paints with Renoir in lΓÇÖEstaque and later, in Paris. Introduced by Guillemet, he is finally admitted to the Salon.
1883- Cézanne works along with Renoir and Monticelli in Provence.
1884- Rejected at the Salon.
1885- An enigmatic passion disturbs him.
1886- Zola publishes “L’Oeuvre”, and Cézanne ends the friendship. He marries Marie-Hortense Fiquet, having as witnesses, his father and mother. On 23 October, his father dies , leaving a considerable inheritance.
1887- Lives in Aix. He is invited to take part in the exhibition of the Groupe des Vingt in Brussels.
1888- He lives in Paris and paints the surrounding area.
1889- Thanks to Chocquet, he shows ΓÇ£The House of The Hanged ManΓÇ¥ at the Universal Exhibition in Paris.
1890- Takes part in the exhibition of the Groupe des Vingt in Brussels.
1891- In Aix. He becomes a practising Catholic.
1892-93- Travels between Aix, Fontainebleau and Paris.
1894- Cézanne visits Monet at Giverny. Monet buys one of his paintings.
1895- First major exhibition of his works at Vollard’s gallery showing one hundred and fifty pictures. After being refused by The Louvre, two of Cézanne’s paintings enter the Musée du Luxembourg with the Caillebotte legacy.
1896- In Aix. He meets Joachim Gasquet, young poet and admirer of his work .
1897- Works in Aix, near the Bibémus cave. His mother dies on 25 October .
1898- In Aix and after in Paris, where he shows 60 works at VollardΓÇÖs gallery.
1899- Exhibits three pictures at the Salon des Indépendants.
1900- Stays in Aix and takes part in the Centennial Exhibition in Paris . The Museum of Berlin buys one of his paintings.
1901- Cézanne builds a studio on the Chemin des Lauves in Aix. He exhibits at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris and the Salon de la Libre Esthétique in Brussels.
1902- Shows paintings at the Salon des Indépendants. Zola dies.
1903- Seven of his works are exhibited in Vienna and three in Berlin. Pissarro dies.
1904- Exhibits at the Salon d’Automne where one whole room is dedicated to him. Visits Emile Bernard. Exhibits nine paintings at the Salon de la Libre Esthétique in Brussels. Personal exhibition in Berlin.
1905- Exhibits at the Salon d’Automne and also at the Salon des Indépendants. Monet publicly expresses his admiration for Cézanne.
1906- Exhibits ten works at the Salon d’Automne. Cézanne dies on 22 October in Aix.
